Description
Titanium Tapered Socket Head Cap Screw (commonly referred to as a taper head bolt) is a precision fastener characterized by its low-profile, conical head that tapers smoothly to the shank. This design reduces weight, minimizes snagging, and offers a sleek, aerodynamic profile, making it ideal for applications where clearance, weight, and fluid dynamics are critical . The primary standards governing their dimensions are DIN 912 and ISO 4762, which ensure compatibility with standard hex keys . The key features of these bolts include a high strength-to-weight ratio (approximately 40-45% lighter than equivalent steel fasteners), exceptional corrosion resistance, and non-magnetic properties .

2. Material Grades and Properties

Titanium taper head bolts are available in a range of grades, each tailored for specific performance requirements. The selection of the grade is crucial for meeting the demands of the application environment, whether it’s for general corrosion resistance, high strength, or specialized chemical resistance .
The table below provides a comparative overview of the common titanium grades used for these bolts.
Grade
Common Alloy Name
Key Characteristics and Typical Applications
Grade 1
Commercially Pure Titanium
Unalloyed titanium offering superior ductility (approx. 30% elongation) and the highest corrosion resistance. It is the most economical choice, suitable for chemical equipment and marine hardware where strength requirements are low .
Grade 2
Commercially Pure Titanium
The most versatile grade of unalloyed titanium, providing an optimal balance of strength, ductility, and corrosion resistance. Widely used in general industrial, architectural, and marine applications .
Grade 5
Ti-6Al-4V (Grade 5)
The industry-standard aerospace alloy. It offers an excellent strength-to-weight ratio, high tensile strength (900-1050 MPa), and good fatigue resistance. It is the premier choice for aerospace, motorsports, and high-performance engineering .
Grade 7
Ti-0.15Pd
Similar to Grade 2 but with added Palladium, which provides outstanding resistance to reducing acids. It is ideally suited for chemical processing, pharmaceutical, and acid processing equipment .
Grade 9
Ti-3Al-2.5V
This alloy offers a compromise between the formability of Grade 2 and the strength of Grade 5. It features superior fatigue resistance and is often used in hydraulic systems and aerospace tubing .
Grade 12
Ti-0.3Mo-0.8Ni
Known for its enhanced crevice corrosion resistance and high-temperature strength, similar to some stainless steels. It is commonly used in heat exchangers and chemical processing equipment .
Grade 23
Ti-6Al-4V ELI
A higher purity, “Extra Low Interstitial” (ELI) version of Grade 5. It provides enhanced fracture toughness and improved ductility, making it the primary grade for medical implants and critical aerospace applications .
Typical Mechanical Properties for Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V):
  • Tensile Strength: 900 – 1050 MPa (approx. 130,000 – 152,000 psi)
  • Yield Strength: approx. 120,000 psi (828 MPa)
  • Elongation: Varies by manufacturing process.

3. Standards, Specifications, and Sizes

These bolts are manufactured to conform to international standards, ensuring dimensional accuracy and performance .
  • Dimensional Standards: The primary standard for taper head bolts is DIN 912 (equivalent to ISO 4762), which specifies the dimensions for hex socket head cap screws .
  • Drive Types: While the internal hex drive (Allen key) is standard per DIN 912, other drive types are available, including Torx® (6-point star), which offers superior torque transmission and reduced risk of cam-out (slippage) in high-torque applications .
  • Size Range: Standard metric thread sizes are readily available from M3 up to M24, with custom diameters and lengths available upon request .
The table below provides example dimensions for a standard M8 Titanium Tapered Head Bolt .
Parameter
Value
Thread Diameter (d)
M8
Thread Pitch
1.25 mm
Head Diameter (dk)
13 mm
Head Height (k)
6 mm
Socket Size (s)
6 mm (Allen key) / T50 (Torx®)
Typical Lengths (L)
20mm, 25mm, 30mm, 35mm, 40mm, 45mm, 50mm, 60mm

4. Manufacturing and Finishing

The manufacturing process significantly impacts the bolt’s strength and durability.
  • Forged Construction: The head is often cold-forged, which aligns the metal’s grain structure, enhancing mechanical strength .
  • Rolled Threads: Threads are typically formed by a rolling process rather than being cut. This cold-works the material, resulting in threads with superior fatigue resistance and structural integrity compared to cut threads .
  • Surface Finishes:
    • Polished: A standard finish offering a smooth, clean surface .
    • Anodized: An electrochemical process that creates a durable, colored oxide layer. Common colors include Blue, Gold, Purple, Red, and Rainbow. Anodizing also increases surface hardness and corrosion resistance .
    • DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon): A high-end coating that provides outstanding wear protection and excellent anti-galling (anti-seizing) properties .

5. Applications and Technical Considerations

  • Primary Applications:
    • Aerospace: Aircraft structures, engine components, and interior panels .
    • Motorsports & High-Performance Automotive: Engine assemblies, brake systems, and bodywork where weight reduction is critical .
    • Marine: Boat fittings, subsea equipment, and components exposed to saltwater .
    • Medical: Surgical instruments, imaging equipment, and non-implantable medical devices (Grade 23 is used for implants) .
    • Chemical Processing: Reactor vessels, heat exchangers, and piping systems in corrosive environments .
  • Important Technical Considerations:
    • Galling: A potential issue with titanium fasteners where surfaces cold-weld under friction. It is highly recommended to use an anti-seize or copper-based paste during installation to prevent this .
    • Torque Values: Proper torque is critical. The values depend on the bolt size, grade, and lubrication. For example, the maximum recommended torque for an M8 Grade 5 bolt is approximately 28.3 Nm .
    • Substitution for Steel: Titanium Grade 5 fasteners are generally suitable for replacing steel fasteners up to ISO Grade 8.8. They are not recommended for applications requiring higher-strength steels (e.g., 10.9 or 12.9) unless specifically engineered for it .
